The car is in the garage. Went there today to check on the 6 speed swap progress and this is what they said.

Gold mine of info https://forums.tdiclub.com/index.php?threads/02s-6-speed-conversion-into-02j-case.527509/

They weren’t happy with the mounts I made up, so they made some from stainless steel. They look much better than mine.

But they have a concern…

The bell housing on the 02S gearbox is 4.5mm thicker than the 02J. It moves the starter further away from the flywheel. They are not sure if this will be a problem.

So I got back to the office and did some more research.

And found this excellent thread on TDI Forums. Which, as it happens, was started by Diesel Dork, the same person in the videos in the previous installments. He goes deep on the 6 speed swap technicals.

Turns out the bell housing difference is a known “feature”.

And most importantly of all, makes absolutely no difference. Starter, driveshafts, clutch all stay the same ie of the 02J. Result!

But again, all this info is coming from the TDI crowd. And this is a 1.8T 20V, so there could still be some issues. Stay tuned…….
